CivWiki Monday Newsletter

A (mostly) weekly newsletter for Civ servers supported by the CivWiki

CivWiki Newsletter for August 18, 2026

• specificlanguage

Hello and happy Tuesday from the Pacific Northwest!

Hello all, nice to see you again.

For those who don’t even know what this is, the CivWiki newsletter is (was?) a “newsletter” I used to run between 2022 and 2024/2025. With 130+ newsletters under my belt, it sometimes boasted epically long reads diving into current affairs and light analysis while providing an overview of the week’s activity on Reddit and Discord. While unrelated, Did you know that on desktop, there is a progress bar to make the read more palatable?

I have sort of been inspired by the news boom that’s happened recently to make a new one, but there are other external factors to explain why I’m back as well, which I’ll explain later. Honestly, part of me was writing again was solely to make the title “An Open Letter” joke anyway.

This newsletter contains information from July 15 all the way to roughly up until August 15 (with one exception). Are we ready to get to the news?

This edition’s featured image is a view of Mount Augusta’s colony in Zorweth. Even though this picture was taken less than a month from release, it still has a very expansive territory withing the country’s crater. While it doesn’t have its signature canals or voter tree yet, you can find the Mount Augusta flag hiding somewhere in there! Another great render from Jasonbord!

Norlund’s iteration on CivRealms was a constitutional monarchy constructed around 13 various cantons and territories representing various player groups across the server. Notably the most historically significant of their iterations, the country previous played in CivEx and TheRealmsMC. Early in its history was a constitutional crises and several secessions, however its primary significance came following the New World colonization, with the Northern War starting after Norlund’s takeover of colonies from Blackwater, who then allied with Yggdrasil to invade the country. They eventually reached an agreement, and became founding members of the Northern Defensive Pact. They eventually played a major part during the Great War of the server.

With its various territories, Norlund had many Civ groups under its umbrella. Although its capital canton Kannin was its population hub, it also hosted Tawa, known for its Great Tower; Veria, who had previously been on many servers prior to CivRealms and had its own unique governmental system; and the Vatican, with the cathedral of Saint Lucia being marked as a national monument. The country was one of the primary nations that were mentioned to newfriends, owing to its unique variety of both playstyles and build styles that made the country easy to be welcomed. While Norlund today has a CivMC iteration and influenced Acadia in CivUniverse, its alumni have played major roles in many countries across CivMC.

This week’s featured image is the town of Veria within Norlund. I didn’t pick Kannin only because this one looked the best out of the three I provided, sorry!

The News

One thing I’m going to do “differently” is to cut down on longer writeups, so a remnant of the “top 10” format will return for the “big stories”, where I’m at least going to limit those to a few paragraphs, and not going too deep into too many things.

A Whole New World

Although Zorweth launched at the end of June, its launch had a major impact on Civ affairs going into July. Zorweth was an attempt to do a server expansion without influencing the primary world at first. A number of nations created various coalitions to colonize the world together, usually aligned with their historical alliances (for example Pavia with their former Elysian Pact, Icenia & Yoahtl with the old ASN, etc.)

Many folks playing will know that one of the major blockers for inter-shard travel (besides the initial /pioneer rush) is “Research”, which challenges players on Main to finish a series of Factory runs in order for any player to transit between then — many players are aware that Stage 2 is taking a very long time, where it’s barely a quarter of the way through at the time of writing (~3k/12k runs needed)

Although I don’t have particular evidence for this fact, it seems many players who chose to pioneer have not particularly take a part in a Civ start of the world before — which is typically very grind-heavy to set up the necessary infrastructure, even more so in Zorweth where it is even trickier due to its mechanics. Posts continued up to my research cutoff that have complained about the slow research and grind needed to get materials, but some have had genuine appreciation.

Backlash got bad enough that zenron_, one of the newest admins, rolled back a “controversial” change that actually reduced Research quota, since that the change would reduce the amount of players that could get cosmetics; however the slow incentive to research in Main has considerably slowed research, making the lack of connection and participation in Zorweth even more agonizing. However, there is some culture arising naturally within the shard, such as its own newsletter from CivMini spokesperson DutchCringe.

An Open Letter to the CivMC Administration

ReplacementDry774

What's Inside?

On July 23, u/ReplacementDry774 posted a long essay that criticized the CivMC administration for its handling of player culture on Civ, framed as an open letter.

While I could write a significant amount of followups on criticism here, (ed. note: Just simply looking at the history of civgen is enough), I’d rather not get into this. You could deep dive on this issue into any number of possible angles, and while I personally believe some points can be valid, a number of these are not. You’ll also see the “Memes” section later on that a number of shitposts followed which criticized this post.

Published responses obviously still occurred, notably the Civ Standard’s back-and-forth coverage here, but I won’t pretend to know everything regarding this conflict. I have mostly laid out the argument and general criticism of said argument, but dive into the posts to continue if you so choose.

A peek from the non-CivMC side of Civ

Tangentially related to the previous conversation is that a number of new servers have, for lack of a better word, a higher market share of Civ players to challenge the mainline CivMC. Let’s just get a quick read of what’s going on.

Many newcomers (not from personal experience) will often find “Civ” servers from events and YouTube videos like Ish’s and commonly come here, so it is really funny seeing a noticeable spike after every video that has “1000 v 1 PLAYERS IN the BIGGEST civilization server in Minecraft”.

Most readers do know this newsletter as pretty much the “CivMC” newsletter, and that’s because it’s where I have the most knowledge of its history & players. However, I am rooting for the success of Civ servers as an entire genre, because I think this genre is an incredibly unique MMO. (ed. note: After all, that’s why I came back right?)

Vacation Time!

Tales from Cortesia Del Mar's Evil Evil Insider

Oko

Can't I take a vacation?

On July 25, Yodabird made a post announcing that following a supposed sabotage, Cortesia Del Mar is now open to visitors again following an impressive effort to reclaim all internal discords, NameLayer groups, and reinforced blocks. In doing so, they had claimed that Oko had ceased all contact following their resignation from the government, and were deemed pearl on sight. While this effort was certainly impressive, a number of comments were a bit skeptical of this effort, noting that Oko had been an upstanding member of the community.

Later that week on the 29th, Oko then made a post in response, and claimed that they had been avoiding contacting CDM following their resignation. One of their points was regarding a disagreement over “the…early preparation of a large [20-ring] Cortesian vault [where] it occurred to me how frustrating this hobby had become”. It was also notable 4 other Cortesians left at seemingly the same time.

Oko had pointed out that they gave their phone number to CDM in the past, but nobody attempted to call. (Yodabird explicitly mentioned they only attempted to contact through Discord.) Oko arranged for a proper transfer of the assets they owned with Icenia, but also harbored no malintent and found it puzzling being deemed pearl-on-sight. Many comments were critical of CDM over a disagreement on vault construction, especially one as large as was accused in the post, along with the rash decisions made during this time.

This kind of behavior interestingly does not seem new. I recently stumbled on a post from OreStraya regarding CDM claims overlapping within Nara being overblown, completely unrelated to this drama but tangentially related to his meme post.

Content Boom

Normally, I would put this as part of “Cool Content”, but I think there is a wealth of such good video content recently that I think it is worth separating into its own section, as well as providing some positivity into this writeup.

A Generic™ Start | A Brief History of CivMC | 2022

Lokilog

Wow, this is generic!

A couple of videos have come out recently that have gotten a lot of traction within the Civ community. Interestingly these videos both chose to cover the exact same thing, the Generic War, which dominated 2022 Civ geopolitics. That being said, I think there is merit to both of these videos and they both present the war very well.

As CivMC is also having a trailer competition, I’m really interested to see what kinds of talent everyone on Civ has been hiding, because recently the videos are so interesting.

Me when I react to your reaction

While we’re on the topic of creating videos, I have to also give a bigger shoutout to this pair of videos, the first of which weaves an incredible, well investigated exposé on finding an alt from both Zorweth and Main; while the production is not as particularly impressive as the previous two, the narration and the story just kept me glued to the screen for this one somehow.

Interestingly there is also a reaction video from MissionQajar which is also interesting in itself as well analyzing how this all came down as well as offering some critiques, but at the end of the day I’m genuinely impressed that he’s impressed.

Since this is news as well, Exyria also responded condemning the actions of Kali & Milevsky, stating that they did not know of their history following their entry after the Ravencrest/Paradis war.

The Advocate's July Issue

Including QuantonBiscuit Interview I chose not to cover

And while we’re on the topic of journalism, it is worth noting a number of newspapers have also sprouted up or revived within the past month, vastly increasing the amount of news coverage across the server. This is including but not limited to, The Civ Standard, The Diamond Chronicler, The Advocate, the aforementioned Zorweth-specific Schizo Post, and the Yoahtl Times. What’s really nice is that the level of quality has noticeably increased in the past year from what I see, and for the most part worth reading.

Being the only news outlet on CivMC for years at a time, I think it is very nice much more localized sources are out here, (ed. note: and honestly, allows me to outsource my job a little bit!)

Around the Server

As usual, this section is for quick rundowns of Reddit posts and other notable announcements. I will also remark that this section is looking at posts from July 15 to August 15. However, I won’t pretend this section is exhaustive; I likely will have gaps as I am not looking at Discord announcements as closely anymore (nor am I not really covering any changes in heads of state, unless particularly drastic). Reddit’s always a much more effective means to get your voice out, where the community isn’t as fragmented.

The Fun Stuff

This section is always for primarily highlighting non-news stuff that gets less coverage, mainly builds pictures, great Civ content like videos & art, and everyone’s favorite memes section which is always busy.

Here are the pictures I used for this week’s editions:

Here are some other highlights I found:

Here are some of the most recent trailers, incidental or deliberate, created specifically for CivMC not highlighted above:

Otherwise, here are a number of other things I found really cool:

Non-Civ Content

This section is just filled with completely unrelated things that have nothing to do with Civ. Oldfriends may wonder why this section was ever here as a regular staple. I previously included this because writing these can be really stressful and/or boring, and this is a respite for me to keep myself entertained.

Additionally, a shoutout to Gearhouse in Seattle that powered me through a final draft.

Poll of the Week

A view of Caldora, Pavia. You know I gotta put in my boy Pavia! (cr: CaptainAxe5)

This section was dreamed up as an interactive section, and was always a staple of the newsletter since its introduction. Normally, the results of the previous poll would have been placed here, prior to the place where you respond. However, the only question I previously asked in October 2025 was a nation census, which would have been pretty inaccurate (and also past my data retention policy).

You don’t have to submit anything if you don’t want to, however my general policy is that all answers are anonymous (it makes it easier that way.)

Please note that all information submitted is anonymous. See the Privacy Policy for more information.

What’s Going On?

Commonwealth’s capitol during the CW-Azora friendship day.

For long-time readers, you may be wondering why there even is another newsletter in the first place, 10 months after the previous one, (even after I was famously publicly complaining about it for a number of months).

Part of it is to be able to flex some creative muscle that I used to have, but no longer utilize as much as part of my IRL work. For a long, long time the newsletter was my way to express this. But after I’ve taken a self-imposed hiatus from Civ, I sort of wanted to prove to myself I can do something relatively creative again. (The recent trend of new or revived newspapers certainly helps, though).

But one thing should be clear: this has never been an AI project, and purposely so — I feel like the personal aspect of this newsletter has been one major piece of why this is successful. These are all human words I’ve written, and folks know I make typo mistakes on writeups often. I don’t want to fall into the Hank Green loop of “I want to make too much stuff and I’m convinced it is possible”, because then that becomes a crutch for AI to write this newsletter. I’ve already admitted I can’t do everything, but I know that AI cannot be part of the equation of a newsletter.

Honestly, I got so frustrated last night trying to fix something on this website, I tried to use AI to fix an issue and battled it for 3 hours instead. Maybe, just maybe I thought “hey, maybe if I actually thought for myself, I wouldn’t have been stuck chasing rabbits”.

Now, I am not committing to any schedule, and there are no promises of another newsletter, but this was also to prove to myself that if I can do this, I can still work in a creative capacity. Maybe this is a one-off and you won’t see me on Civ again, but I wanted to at least prove to myself I was still capable of doing this all this time.

I think that’s all I have to say though. Usually this last section is just a brain dump of thoughts and I am glad people can appreciate reading through my rambling of random thoughts. I know this institution has had a major impact on Civ news, let alone Civ for a long time, and over the months since I’ve gone, I deeply appreciate all the kindness even months after the newsletter “ended”. You don’t appreciate what you’ve left behind until you’re gone.

While I haven’t been running ads, if you’re interested in sending me a blank check or just donations, I can accept them at HS-NEWS in Monument Bank. If you care about sending me IRL money (like some folks have expressed in the past) — I wouldn’t, go send it to a cause that’s actually worth it.

Until the next one(?), you can always find me…
